A big topic in this issue is this summer’s fires on the Brocken. The largest of these brought the chunk into the national headlines. The flames burned for days in the parched forests below the summit. Over 300 firefighters were on duty, supported by firefighting helicopters and firefighting aircraft. Other topics in this issue: work on Schierke Castle, the Brocken witches from Schierke, repairs to the cloud house and activities around the Schierke Arena.

Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is now one of the prominent Brocken hikers. In July 21 he hiked to the summit together with Saxony-Anhalt’s Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff and Lower Saxony’s Prime Minister Stephan Weil. Once at the top there were nice pictures for the press and a ZDF summer interview. Other topics of this issue: the forest around the Brocken, the Harzer hiking pin, the Schierker Loipenhaus and the construction of a new sports toboggan run.
